Pick the right clubs
If you are anything like me then you will agree that buying a new set of golf clubs is an intimidating venture. There are so many different kinds of clubs out there, how in the world are you supposed to know which one is best for you? Many golfers start out with a set of hand-me-down clubs that were on sale at a yard sale, or gathering dust in the corner of their grandparent’s basement. When it finally comes time to replace the relics with something more worthy of the skill level that you now have, the process makes you want to quit playing golf altogether. Here are a few things to consider when you are setting out to buy a new set of clubs.
Pick a price range and stay in it.
There are so many different kinds of clubs out there with so many different price tags. Ideally you should have at least a $500 price range if you want to get a decent set of clubs. You may be able to find something for a little less than that and you can always find something for considerable more than that. Don’t leave the details of your price range up to the salesman, set it before you go out shopping and stick to it. You can find something that is right for you and in your price range if you look long enough.
Buy a club, not a brand
Don’t buy something just because it is a brand name item. Your game will not improve because you are swinging something that you saw on TV, get the club that fits you. Too many people go out and buy something that is too expensive and not right for them simply because it is a brand that they have seen some of the professional golfers using. Don’t make that mistake. If you do you will inevitably pay more than you wanted and get less than you expected.
Try it before you buy it
You can’t always try out every club before you purchase it, but you can try out different kinds of clubs. Go to any decent driving range, or course that has a driving range, and the pro shop will always have clubs that you can take out and see how they feel. Try different kinds of shafts, different sizes of head, and different grips. Take advantage of their willingness to let you swing a lot of different clubs. Generally, if you tell them that you are shopping for a new set of clubs, they will be very accommodating. It is always a bad idea to buy a golf club that you are completely unfamiliar with, so try it out first.
Do your research
Find out what it is that each different kind of club does. What exactly are you looking for in a club? Find out which clubs meet those needs. If you find out as much as you can about the clubs, you will buy the right one. Once you have narrowed the field down, do what was mentioned before, try it out!
Summary
Buying a new set of clubs is always exciting. Once you get them, the anticipation of getting them out on the course and dusting them off is great. Make sure that you get the right clubs or that anticipation will quickly fade and all that you will end up with is a set of clubs that your grandson can one day find gathering dust in the corner of your basement.
